Space Systems Engineer (Senior)

München, Remote
Full-time
Permanent employee

Your mission

With thousands of satellites in orbit providing critical services like telecommunications, geolocation, and meteorology, ensuring their safety and the long-term sustainability of the space environment is at the core of our mission. Vyoma's vision is to build Europe's first sovereign space surveillance solution capable of mapping all centimetre-scale space objects orbiting in low-Earth orbit (LEO).

To support this endeavor, we are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Space Systems Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be the technical authority on the customer side, overseeing contracted spacecraft development and ensuring that delivered systems meet our mission, performance, and sovereign capability requirements. You will work across a broad range of disciplines — from mission concept and requirements definition through to supplier oversight, acceptance testing, and on-orbit operations support.

Your responsibilities will include:

Mission and Technical Leadership and Supplier Oversight

  • Lead cross-functional engineering initiatives (with colleagues from Space Systems, Advanced Concepts, Embedded Engineering, Mission Operations), serving as the subject matter expert (SME) for space system design and providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.
  • Translate high-level mission objectives into clear, verifiable system and subsystem requirements; support requirements architecture definition.
  • Conduct trade studies to inform procurement decisions, including spacecraft bus selection, payload accommodation, orbit design, and launch vehicle compatibility.
  • Oversee the systems engineering process across all mission phases (concept, design, development, integration, test, launch, and operations), in conjunction with technical team.
  • Participate in and lead customer-side preparation for supplier milestone reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, FRR, etc.), providing independent technical assessment, including dissemination of review procedures and findings
  • Review and approve supplier-generated technical documentation, including design reports, interface definitions, test plans, and verification matrices.
  • Assess supplier compliance with contractual and technical requirements; identify non-conformances and drive resolution.

Verification, Validation and Acceptance Oversight

  • Review and approve supplier verification and validation (V&V) evidence, ensuring full traceability to requirements.
  • Oversee integration and test activities for spacecraft, payloads, or ground systems.
  • Support selection of internal tools to validate supplier analyses.
  • Support verification, validation and acceptance of mission hardware, software, procedures and processes.
  • Manage technical disposition of non-conformance reports (NCRs) and waivers raised during development and acceptance.
  • Oversee integration of the space segment with ground segment and user terminals, ensuring end-to-end system compatibility.

Risk & Program Management Support

  • Identify, assess, and track technical risks and opportunities across the procured system; drive mitigation actions with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Support schedule and cost estimation activities; track technical performance measures and report system maturity status to programme leadership.
  • Interface with program managers, internal and external stakeholders on technical matters.

Your profile

  • Education: Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar STEM field.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in space systems engineering, with demonstrated involvement in spacecraft development programmes on the customer, prime contractor, or system integrator side.
  • Proven ability to define and manage system-level requirements and maintain a technical baseline across complex, multi-supplier programmes.
  • Direct exposure to dual-use, defence, or government space programmes (e.g., ISR, SATCOM, PNT, Space Domain Awareness) preferred, including an understanding of export control regulations (ITAR, EAR, or national equivalents) as they apply to dual-use space systems.
  • Familiarity with ground segment architecture, mission data systems and CCSDS standards.
  • Experience managing technical aspects of supplier contracts, including SOW definition and change control, critical revision of supplier technical documentation and participation in formal design reviews.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards, such as ECSS, MIL-STD, or equivalent national space/defence standards.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft subsystem engineering in one or more domains (e.g., ADCS, RF communications, power, propulsion, thermal, structures/mechanisms, or payload).
  • Proficiency with requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, Jama, or equivalent) and MBSE tools.

Why us?

  • We nurture your growth. Our employees are key to the success of Vyoma, that is why we want you to grow fast and assume greater responsibility. We also invest in your training while on the job.

About us

Vyoma is on a mission to solve one of the big issues humanity faces today: the problem of space debris threatening active satellites in orbit. We are building a fleet of space cameras to monitor such space debris. Together with our software suite, we build an accurate catalogue of space objects, automate satellite operations for our customers, and ultimately keep our orbits clean and safe. We are a young and international team of aerospace engineers and software developers, backed by some of the top investors and venture capitalists in Germany.

Our offices are located very centrally in Munich (Bonner Platz). Amongst others, you can expect a great (very international) team atmosphere, highly qualified colleagues, flexible working hours, remote/hybrid work, and a very exciting company vision.
